National Flag of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, once known as “The Pearl of the Orient” has for the past 30 years been devastated by civil war between the Government forces and the LTTE (Rebel Tamil Tigers, who have been fighting for their own homeland. After a three year period trying to reach a peaceful agreement, once again hopes have been shattered by the upsurge in conflict. Although the main ‘battle front’ has been pushed back further to the north of the Eastern Province, peoples’ daily lives are affected by travel restrictions, roadblocks and interrogation. Suicide bombers and land mines are an ongoing hazard.

Our work began in Sri Lanka in the early 1990’s after Ps Barry was introduced to Ps. Somanathan at an Australian conference. Commencing with ministry to small groups of pastors and leaders, the work has continued to grow to include a 4 local churches and a number of outreaches, 2 Boy’s Homes (Vavuniya & Valachchenai), a Girl’s Home (Valachchenai), a large property to be developed as a Vocational Training Centre and a Bible School ( CRC Ministry Training Centre).

50 children are now in our care and it is wonderful see God working in their lives, replacing fear and poverty with healing, security and a new hope for their future. Our Children’s Homes are all staffed by national people who have been helped for limited periods by short-term missionary staff. The process of having our Homes registered as a Social Service Organization continues slowly. When granted we should then be able to gain longer term visas for trained missionary staff.

Part of our Kalkudah land has been planted with rice, and the first harvest reaped. We are employing a farmer to further develop the site which is currently being planted with coconuts and vegetables and in future will become the major source of food crops for our Homes.

Our Bible School has been in recess in 2008 but it is planned to re-commence in early 2009 at a new location in the south.

Over recent years many hundreds of pastors and leaders have benefitted from our interdenominational Leadership Schools which have been held twice yearly for up to a week in a growing number locations across the nation (6 in 2008). A small number of pastors from Australia together with some local pastors have committed to this ministry which has been a very positive, uniting influence after years of discouragement and uncertainty.
